What began in 2002 with 5,000 running enthusiasts has long since developed into the largest running event in Upper Austria. Today, the Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon attracts around 20,000 participants and over 100,000 spectators from almost 80 nations - making it not only a sporting highlight, but also an important economic factor and tourism magnet. Thousands of overnight stays in the region prove the great appeal of this event year after year.
The route of the Linz Danube Marathon is one of the fastest in Austria - and also offers a unique running experience. The start on the imposing Voest Bridge gives you goosebumps every year, before passing through some of the city's most beautiful squares. The flat and fast course is just as popular with professional athletes as it is with amateur runners - not least because you can compete with some of the best runners in the world here. This is also demonstrated by the impressive course records: Gladys Jerop Kimaina (KEN) ran the marathon distance in 2:24:58 in 2025, while Fikre Bekele (ETH) has held the men's record since 2022 with 2:06:13.
The Linz Danube Marathon has grown enormously in recent years - and yet it has retained what makes it so special: a running festival with heart. Despite its size, the event retains its family character. The dedicated organization team attaches great importance to individually tailored service, whether for individuals or large groups. Before and during the races, it ensures optimal support, which is highly appreciated by the participants. The marathon not only impresses with its cordiality, but also with an excellent price-performance ratio.
